LANGUAGE AND REALITY<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to submit a proposal for the 9th edition of VocUM, which will be held on November 17th and 18th, 2022. VocUM is an international colloquium organized annually by students of Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al from different fields of study relating to language. It is the only multidisciplinary conference in Montreal dedicated to language. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theme for      the 2022 edition of VocUM is Language and Reality. Indeed, the thorny subject of reality gives rise to reflections and debates, which are almost always addressed through the question of language. Although we may easilyadmit that language and reality are closely related, the nature of the link that unites them divides the academic communities. More than a simple reflection of reality, language and its structures can, according to some, influence or even determine our representations of the world. Conversely, language is also shaped by reality and (re)defined by the ever-changing experiences and worldviews of its speakers. Therefore, this edition of VocUM invites its participants to explore the multiple ways the link between language and reality can be expressed. To highlight the polysemy of the theme, we welcome presentations from various fields     . Philosophical, psychological, or linguistic reflections on the association between language and representations of the world (linguistic bias, relativism, and linguistic determinism) or registers of apprehension of reality (the Real, Symbolic, and Imaginary) are welcome. The question of language in the context of individual or collective realities can be addressed, notably in presentations dealing with language difficulties. Cognitive or mental health disorders, with diachronic or dystopic variations of given linguistic phenomena, or with experiences specific to certain groups of speakers (e.g., bilingualism, code-switching, reading, minority language, impact of language policies) are of particular interest. We also welcome proposals that situate language in relation to identity, political, or activist realities     , such as those that consider an ethical or political postureor that describe issues of discrimination, power, and accessibility (translation, interpretation, signed languages, inclusive language). Also relevant are studies that focus on the narration of individual and collective realities in literature (autobiographical genre or autofiction, historical and memorial writings) and the media (reflections on editorial type, media treatment of real facts: objectivity, fake news). We also invite researchers from the field of cognitive science to submit proposals emphasizing the impact of language in the construction of world representations. As the digital age calls for a re-evaluation of our relationship to reality, we also encourage proposals that address the impact of new technologies: modes of expression and linguistic conventions in the virtual sphere, the impact of remote communication platforms on communication, the development of new language concepts (e.g., voldemorting, algospeak), virtual reality interventions for people with language disorders, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exact modalities of the 2022 edition (platform, synchronicity, etc.) will be determined as the conference approaches, depending on the evolution of the pandemic reality and the health conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The languages of presentation remain French<\/strong> and English<\/strong>. However, to resist the linguistic homogenization of scientific research, VocUM encourages the dissemination of knowledge in French. Similarly, research in Hispanic Studies or German Studies may be presented in Spanish<\/strong> and German<\/strong>, respectively. Proposals from undergraduate students will also be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proposals, of no more than 300 words, should be submitted using the electronic form available on the VocUM website. Proposals will be evaluated anonymously by a scientific committee. Oral presentations will last 15 to 20 minutes (to be determined according to the final number of presentations) and will be followed by a question period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We would like to remind you that the journal ScriptUM, the dissemination arm of VocUM, is now open to all. It is a multidisciplinary student publication with anonymous peer review. Presenters are strongly encouraged to submit an article on the results to be presented at the 9th<\/sup> edition of the conference.
